The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli, has called on all residents of the province, as well as visitors from across the country, to prioritise safety, vigilance, and tolerance during the busy Easter weekend.
The province has begun experiencing a significant influx of holidaymakers, with traffic volumes increasing notably on major routes such as the N3 highway, where approximately 2,500 vehicles per hour have been recorded entering KwaZulu-Natal.
Premier Ntuli has urged all motorists travelling within and into the province to strictly adhere to road safety regulations. He emphasised the importance of ensuring that vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey and encouraged responsible driving at all times.
The Premier further appealed to operators of buses and taxis transporting congregants to various Easter services and religious gatherings to prioritise passenger safety. He called for thorough vehicle inspections prior to travel and urged long-distance drivers to rest adequately, comply with speed limits, and observe all road safety measures.
Premier Ntuli issued a stern warning against drinking and driving, stating that law enforcement agencies will be out in full force across the province. Road Traffic Inspectorate teams will be deployed extensively, and there will be zero tolerance for alcohol-related offences, overloading, and unroadworthy vehicles. Offenders will face the full might of the law.
Importantly, the Premier made a strong appeal for peace and restraint during this period. He urged individuals who may harbour grudges or intentions of retaliation to refrain from acts of violence.
“This Easter weekend must not be used as an opportunity to settle scores or pursue acts of revenge. I urge all those who may have differences to choose peace, restraint, and dialogue over violence. Let us build a province rooted in stability and harmony, conditions that are essential not only for safe communities, but also for attracting investment and growing our economy,” said Premier Ntuli.
The Premier also called on individuals in possession of illegal firearms to voluntarily surrender them to the police.
“There is no place for illegal firearms in our communities. Those who are in possession of such weapons are urged to hand them over to law enforcement authorities before the police are compelled to act. Removing illegal guns from circulation is critical in reducing violent crime,” he added.
The Premier further emphasised the importance of safeguarding vulnerable groups, particularly children, minors, and the elderly, during the Easter period.
“Parents and guardians must ensure that children and vulnerable persons are not left unattended. Their safety and well-being must remain a top priority at all times,” said Premier Ntuli.
To further ensure public safety, the Premier confirmed that there will be heightened police visibility across all districts in the province to deter criminal activity and ensure a safe environment for both residents and visitors.
Premier Ntuli also extended his appreciation to all law enforcement and community safety stakeholders, including the South African Police Service (SAPS), Metro Police, Municipal Law Enforcement, and community safety structures, for their vigilance and dedication in safeguarding communities during this busy period.
Premier Ntuli concluded by wishing all citizens of KwaZulu-Natal and visitors a safe, peaceful, and blessed Easter weekend. He urged everyone to play their part in maintaining the province as a safe and welcoming destination.
