Pietermaritzburg - KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli outlined the primary objectives of the Caluza Crime Fighting Imbizo as part of intensified efforts to combat crime and strengthen community safety across the province.
The Premier commenced the day with a briefing session at Plessislaer Police Station, where he received a progress report on the implementation of the police turnaround strategy and ongoing crime prevention interventions. The briefing provided insight into operational challenges, crime trends and measures being implemented to improve policing effectiveness in the area.
Strengthening Community Policing
Premier Ntuli later proceeded to Poyinandi Community Hall, where he engaged with community members and stakeholders. During the engagement, he emphasised the critical role of functional community policing structures in supporting law enforcement agencies.
He noted that community-based structures are essential in augmenting police resources through intelligence gathering, early detection of criminal activity and fostering trust between communities and law enforcement.
Ensuring Stability in Police Leadership
Addressing concerns around policing leadership, Premier Ntuli assured residents that the contract renewal of Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as SAPS Provincial Commissioner has been signed by General Fannie Masemola.
The Premier indicated that the renewal will ensure continuity and stability within the provincial police leadership, which is critical for sustaining momentum in the fight against crime.
Renewed Focus on Crime Prevention
Premier Ntuli expressed confidence that strengthened leadership, combined with coordinated crime prevention strategies and community involvement, will lead to more effective interventions and improved safety outcomes across KwaZulu-Natal.
The Caluza Crime Fighting Imbizo forms part of the Provincial Government’s broader strategy to intensify crime prevention, enhance policing capacity and build safer communities through collaborative efforts between government, law enforcement and residents.
