Pietermaritzburg | 26 February 2026 - Isilo Samabandla King Misuzulu KaZwelithini officially opened the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature at Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday, 26 February 2026, in a ceremony marked by cultural symbolism, traditional regalia, and strong reflections on identity, heritage and governance.
The Official Opening of the Legislature is a significant constitutional and ceremonial event on the provincial calendar. It sets the tone for the legislative year, outlines broad priorities, and provides guidance to elected representatives as they deliberate on policy, budgets and service delivery programmes for the year ahead.
Call to Rename KwaZulu-Natal
During his address, His Majesty reiterated the call he made at the commemoration of Impi YaseSandlwana on 22 January 2026 for the province to be renamed the Kingdom of KwaZulu. The King questioned the historical naming of the province by Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in 1497, who named it “Natal” after arriving on Christmas Day.
“How can you discover something that is already there?” the King asked, challenging the colonial narrative that disregarded the existence, sovereignty and civilisation of indigenous communities long before European arrival.
His Majesty emphasised that restoring the name would not merely be symbolic, but an affirmation of historical truth, cultural dignity and the identity of the Zulu nation within a democratic South Africa.
Tribute to Queen Mantfombi and Women of the Province
King Misuzulu dedicated his address to his late mother, Queen Shiyiwe Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu, acknowledging the guidance, discipline and leadership values she instilled in him. He described her as a pillar of wisdom and moral strength whose teachings continue to shape his leadership.
The King also paid tribute to women across the province, recognising their resilience and their indispensable role in sustaining families, communities and the broader social fabric. He called for the respect, protection and empowerment of women, particularly in the face of persistent gender-based violence and socio-economic inequality.
Cultural Identity and Governance
His Majesty underscored the importance of aligning governance with cultural heritage, urging lawmakers and government leaders to remain grounded in the values of unity, respect, accountability and service to the people.
The ceremony was attended by provincial leadership, Members of the Legislature, traditional leaders, government officials and members of the public. The event combined constitutional formality with traditional observances, reflecting KwaZulu-Natal’s unique blend of democratic governance and cultural heritage.
The opening of the Legislature marks the beginning of the province’s formal legislative programme for 2026, during which government will advance its policy priorities, oversee implementation of development programmes and strengthen service delivery across KwaZulu-Natal.
