Durban - KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli presided over a Round Table Discussion on undocumented foreign nationals, focusing on the complex challenges associated with illegal immigration in South Africa, particularly within KwaZulu-Natal.

In his opening remarks, Premier Ntuli emphasised that illegal immigration constitutes a violation of the legal frameworks that govern nations and maintain orderly migration systems. He noted that unlawful entry and residence not only undermine the rule of law but also present broader socio-economic and governance challenges.

The Premier further indicated that illegal immigration erodes public trust in government institutions, highlighting concerns such as the proliferation of contraband and counterfeit goods, human trafficking, and fraudulent documentation practices linked to undocumented migration networks.

Representatives from the Departments of Education and Health delivered presentations addressing the implications of undocumented foreign nationals accessing public services. The Head of Department for Education, Mr Ngcobo, referenced a court ruling affirming that undocumented learners cannot be denied access to basic education solely due to lack of official documentation, underscoring the constitutional imperative to uphold the right to education.

The round table was attended by stakeholders including the South African Police Service (SAPS), traditional leaders, faith-based organisations, civic formations such as March on March, and other community representatives. Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration, improving regulatory compliance, and balancing enforcement with humanitarian and constitutional obligations.

The engagement forms part of ongoing provincial efforts to address migration-related challenges through coordinated dialogue, policy alignment and multi-sectoral cooperation.
