The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli, in partnership with provincial sports federations and the South African Football Association (SAFA), today presided over the official handover of training kits to hostel-based sports teams as part of the Sport Against Crime programme a strategic initiative aimed at harnessing the power of sport to combat crime and promote positive youth development.
The handover ceremony, held at the Archie Gumede Conference Centre in Mayville, marked the official launch of a far-reaching provincial campaign designed to engage young people through structured sporting activities. The initiative is grounded in the conviction that sport is not only a powerful tool for physical and mental development but also an effective vehicle to divert youth from crime, substance abuse, and anti-social behaviour.
Set to be rolled out across KwaZulu-Natal, the Sport Against Crime programme is tailored to provide young people particularly those from marginalised communities with meaningful opportunities for growth, discipline, teamwork, and mentorship. By focusing on hostel communities, the programme seeks to promote inclusion and make a direct impact in areas where access to recreational infrastructure and organised sport is limited.
The official tournament launch is scheduled for later this month, with competitive matches and community-driven activities beginning in November. The tournament will culminate in a provincial showcase, bringing together youth teams from across KwaZulu-Natal in a celebration of sportsmanship, unity, and shared purpose.
This pioneering initiative enjoys the support and endorsement of celebrated South African football legends including Simon Makhubela, Siyabonga Sangweni, Siyabonga Nomvethe, Professor Ngubane and Sibusiso Zuma, whose involvement brings visibility, inspiration, and mentorship to aspiring athletes. In addition, veteran radio personality Joe Hudla has lent his voice and influence to expand the programme’s reach and amplify its message of empowerment through sport.
Premier Ntuli commended all partners involved in the programme, describing the initiative as a vital intervention to foster social cohesion, prevent crime, and empower the province’s youth.
“This is more than just football it is a social development tool. Through programmes like this, we aim to create safe spaces for young people to unlock their potential, discover purpose, and turn away from crime. I commend our sporting partners and legends for investing their time and energy in nurturing the leaders and champions of tomorrow,” said Premier Ntuli.
The programme has also received endorsement from AmaZulu FC and Joma Sportswear, further strengthening its impact and credibility. In addition to football and netball, the programme will showcase a diverse range of sporting and cultural activities including Ingoma, Amavukane kuMaskanda, and Umlabalaba, reflecting the province’s rich heritage and inclusive approach to community development.
“The Sport Against Crime programme embodies the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government’s broader commitment to holistic youth development and community upliftment through innovative, multi-sectoral partnerships. It stands as a clear demonstration of our leadership’s unwavering dedication to building safer, healthier, and more resilient communities harnessing the transformative power of sport as a catalyst for change,” concluded Premier Ntuli.
