Durban | 21 June 2025 - The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, under the leadership of Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, joined millions around the world in marking the 11th International Day of Yoga at a vibrant celebration held at the Durban North Beach Amphitheatre. In collaboration with the Sivananda World Peace Foundation, the province hosted the event under the global theme: “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.”
Premier Ntuli was warmly welcomed by citizens from across KwaZulu-Natal and international guests, underscoring the growing appreciation of yoga as a tool for holistic health and global harmony. The Premier lauded the event as a powerful symbol of unity, peace, and the shared responsibility to promote wellness—both individual and environmental.
The International Day of Yoga, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, is celebrated worldwide to highlight the many benefits of yoga as a mind-body discipline rooted in ancient Indian philosophy. This year’s theme reflects the interconnectedness between human wellbeing and the health of the planet, reinforcing the value of mindful living in today’s world.
“Yoga is more than just a physical practice; it is a philosophy that teaches balance, discipline, and compassion,” said Premier Ntuli. “As we continue to confront global and local challenges—ranging from mental health to climate change—events like these remind us of the importance of grounding ourselves in practices that foster resilience and collective healing.”
The Durban celebration featured guided yoga sessions led by experienced instructors from the Sivananda World Peace Foundation, welcoming participants of all ages and skill levels. Attendees engaged in stretching, breathwork, and meditation exercises, and were also introduced to the science of yoga and its application in daily life.
The Provincial Government reaffirmed its commitment to promoting wellness, mental health, and physical activity among all citizens, especially in underserved communities. By integrating initiatives like the International Day of Yoga into its wellness agenda, the government seeks to create a healthier, more balanced, and more united KwaZulu-Natal.
Residents are encouraged to continue practicing yoga beyond the event and to embrace healthier lifestyles that contribute to personal well-being and the sustainability of our environment.
