KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli, has strongly condemned the alleged rape incident that occurred at Bizimali School and has called for the immediate arrest of the suspect, who is currently on the run. The Premier appealed to the South African Police Service and the local community to work together and share any information that could assist in locating and apprehending the suspect.
“This shocking act has no place in our schools or in our society. We appeal to anyone with knowledge of the suspect’s whereabouts to urgently contact the nearest police station. Silence protects perpetrators – we must all take a stand against violence,” said Premier Ntuli.
Premier Ntuli reiterated his call for all communities to report incidents of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and reaffirmed the Provincial Government’s unwavering commitment to the protection and safety of all residents, particularly women and children.
*Premier Ntuli also acknowledged progress in two high-profile GBV cases: Mjilo Case*
The Premier welcomed the strides made in the investigation of Ayabonga Mjilo’s case and commended law enforcement for their diligence. The case has been postponed to 23 June 2025. The matter is set to be transferred to the High Court following the latest appearance. The Premier called on the judiciary to impose the harshest possible sentence if the accused is found guilty. Calls on all sectors to support families of Gender Based Violence Cases.
*Ndwedwe Case – Justice for Ms Sindi Gumede*
Premier Ntuli expressed deep outrage and sorrow over the appalling gender-based violence committed against Ms Sindi Gumede. The alleged perpetrator, Mr. Sifiso Nkwanyana, was arrested on Wednesday, 14 May 2025, by Ndwedwe Police.
According to reports, on Thursday, 8 May 2025, Ms Gumede was allegedly kidnapped in Verulam under false pretenses by her former partner, Mr. Nkwanyana. He then transported her to his home in Ndwedwe where she was physically assaulted, held against her will, and repeatedly raped over the course of the night. The Premier condemned this vile act in the strongest terms and commended the swift action of the police in apprehending the suspect.
Premier Ntuli further emphasized that Gender-Based Violence affects both women and men, and urged male victims to report abuse without fear, shame, or stigma.
“We must build a society where no person—woman, man or child—lives in fear. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. We owe it to survivors to ensure they are heard, supported and protected,” Premier Ntuli stated.
