Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, 10 May 2025 - In a significant gesture of respect and acknowledgement, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, together with the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, presided over the official handover of recognition certificates to izinduna and amakhosi during a formal ceremony held earlier today.
The ceremony, which celebrated the vital role that traditional leadership plays in governance, community cohesion, and rural development, brought together leaders from across the province. The recognition certificates affirmed the legitimacy and status of traditional leaders as custodians of culture, heritage, and local governance structures.
Premier Ntuli praised the unwavering service and wisdom of traditional leaders, noting that their role is indispensable in building safer, more united and self-reliant communities.
“Our izinduna and amakhosi are the bridge between government and the people,” said Premier Ntuli. “They are champions of our traditions, and essential partners in delivering development and maintaining peace at grassroots level.”
The ceremony also reaffirmed the 7th Administration’s commitment to strengthening traditional governance and ensuring that it is fully integrated into the broader provincial development agenda.
MEC Buthelezi echoed the Premier’s sentiments, adding that the recognition was long overdue and symbolised a renewed partnership between government and traditional authorities in driving meaningful change in rural communities.
The event marked another milestone in KwaZulu-Natal’s efforts to empower traditional leaders and reinforce their role in shaping a socially cohesive and economically vibrant province.
