The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government marked the 2025 Human Rights Day with a celebration that underscored the province’s commitment to upholding human rights for all.
During the 2025 Human Rights Day Provincial Commemoration, Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli issued a powerful call for all attendees to serve as Ambassadors in the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
"Human rights cannot be fully realized without the safety and dignity of every individual. We must unite as a society to safeguard the most vulnerable and work relentlessly to end GBV in our communities," Premier Ntuli stated.
The Premier also called for an end to Ukuthwala, condemning it as a grave violation of the rights of young women. He stressed that forced abduction and marriage have no place in a just society and urged communities to step up and protect young women from such abuse.
Commitment to Empowering Women and Youth
Premier Ntuli expressed appreciation for the 6th Administration’s impactful efforts in promoting youth and women’s empowerment. He assured that the 7th Administration is dedicated to continuing these efforts, including the launch of the New KZN Women Empowerment Fund, aimed at providing economic opportunities for women throughout the province.
Building a Just and Equal Society
Emphasising the importance of unity, Premier Ntuli shared that KwaZulu-Natal’s future hinges on collective action across racial and social lines to build a better, safer, and more inclusive society. He outlined key priorities of the 7th Administration: Fostering inclusive economic growth and job creation, Reducing poverty and social inequality, Strengthening the capacity of the provincial government.
This vision aligns with the 2025 Human Rights Day theme: *“Deepening a Culture of Social Justice and Human Rights”*
Government Initiatives to Protect Human Rights
Premier Ntuli reaffirmed the KZN Government’s unwavering commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of all citizens, highlighting key interventions such as:
*Victim-Friendly Rooms* at police stations to assist survivors of abuse
*Prioritizing housing for the elderly and military veterans*
*Supporting the Madaka and Isigedlane farming communities*
*Enhancing GBVF Rapid Response Teams* to ensure swift justice for victims
*Expanding male-focused programs like Khuluma Ndoda* to involve men in the fight against GBVF
Additionally, the province is committed to eliminating discrimination and violence against people with disabilities and those living with albinism , ensuring their rights are respected and protected.

As part of the commemoration, Premier Ntuli celebrated the exceptional life of uBaba John Khetha Ntaka, a 103-year-old centenarian, paying tribute to the wisdom and resilience of the province’s elders.
