KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli, joined Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille, Deputy Minister Maggie Sotyu, and members of the eThekwini Executive Committee for a hands-on beach clean-up in Durban. The initiative, organized by the Department of Tourism in partnership with eThekwini Metro and the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, marks the fifth clean-up in an ongoing series aimed at promoting environmental conservation and responsible tourism.
The clean-up campaign aligns with the government’s commitment to preserving the environment and maintaining Durban’s status as a top-tier holiday destination. As the festive season approaches, the initiative underscores the need for collaborative efforts to ensure beaches and other attractions remain clean, safe, and appealing to both local and international tourists.
Premier Ntuli emphasized the significance of such programs, stating, “Tourism is one of the cornerstones of KwaZulu-Natal’s economy. Maintaining clean and welcoming spaces is not just about aesthetics but also about fostering a sense of pride and responsibility among residents.”
The beach clean-up forms part of a larger roadshow under the Tourism Sector Masterplan, which seeks to:
• Promote tourism attractions and hidden gems across South Africa’s provinces.
• Foster collaboration between industry stakeholders, community members, and government entities.
• Drive initiatives that enhance safety and environmental awareness at key tourist sites.
The roadshow includes industry engagements, on-site visits to tourism hotspots, and safety activations designed to improve the overall visitor experience.
Minister Patricia de Lille highlighted the importance of integrating community engagement into tourism and conservation efforts. “Sustainable tourism is about ensuring that the beauty and biodiversity of our destinations are preserved for future generations. Clean-up campaigns like these inspire communities to take an active role in protecting their environment,” she said.
Deputy Minister Maggie Sotyu echoed these sentiments, adding that partnerships with local governments and residents are critical for the success of such initiatives.
With its iconic beaches, vibrant culture, and rich heritage, Durban remains a premier destination for holidaymakers. Efforts like the beach clean-up not only reinforce the city’s appeal but also align with broader environmental and tourism goals.
The eThekwini Municipality expressed its gratitude to the Department of Tourism and the provincial government for their continued support, stating, “Collaborative actions like these contribute immensely to our city’s sustainability and reputation as a world-class tourist hub.”
As part of its commitment to fostering responsible tourism, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government continues to champion initiatives that balance economic growth with environmental stewardship. The Durban beach clean-up is a shining example of how partnerships between government, industry, and communities can create lasting positive change.
