KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, alongside Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Mntomuhle Khawula, SAFA President Danny Jordaan, and Inkosi Zuzifa Buthelezi, attended the closing of the 2024 KZN Premier’s Cup at the Prince Mangosuthu Regional Stadium in Ulundi. The event, held on Sunday, 28 July 2024, was marked by a semi-final match between AmaZulu FC and Royal AM, showcasing the region's football talent and community spirit.
In his address, Premier Ntuli expressed immense pride and gratitude for the success of the tournament. He extended heartfelt thanks to all involved, including the Office of the Premier, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, and the dedicated organisers. He acknowledged the challenges faced due to a constrained environment but commended the efforts that ensured the tournament's success as a beacon of hope and excitement for the football-loving community.
Premier Ntuli also highlighted the importance of the tournament in promoting sportsmanship and inspiring the youth. He praised the six local soccer teams – AmaZulu FC, Lamontville Golden Arrows, Maritzburg United, Royal AM, Richards Bay FC, and Milford – for their participation and commitment to excellence. Their performances not only entertained fans but also inspired young boys and girls across the province to dream big and pursue their passion for football.
The 2024 Premier’s Cup marked a significant shift by being held in Ulundi, moving the tournament outside the traditional big cities. This decision allowed fans from rural areas to witness competitive football in their own communities, making the event more inclusive and accessible. Premier Ntuli emphasised that this initiative was part of a broader effort to foster tolerance, unity, and social cohesion in the province, transcending political affiliations and backgrounds.
The event's success underscored the unifying power of football, as reflected in the lively atmosphere and the shared moments of joy among players, fans, and dignitaries. Premier Ntuli's speech resonated with the spirit of the tournament, focusing on unity and community pride. He expressed hope for the continued growth of the Premier’s Cup, aiming to bring joy, economic benefits, and a sense of community to every corner of KwaZulu-Natal.
As the tournament concluded, anticipation already began building for the 2025 Premier’s Cup, with Premier Ntuli encouraging everyone to look forward to an even more exciting event next year. The Premier’s Cup has become more than just a football tournament; it is a celebration of the province's cultural diversity, resilience, and shared love for the beautiful game.
