The Executive Council of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, chaired by Premier Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli, convened its Cabinet meeting on 6 August 2025 to deliberate on pressing socio-economic matters affecting the province. The meeting reaffirmed the Provincial Government’s unwavering commitment to accelerating service delivery, creating jobs, strengthening institutions, and building a caring, people-centred administration.
Key outcomes of the Cabinet Meeting are as follows:
*UNEMPLOYED DOCTORS: A DECISIVE HEALTHCARE INTERVENTION*
Cabinet raised concern about the increasing number of unemployed medical doctors in the province, even as public health facilities continue to grapple with staff shortages.
In a practical response, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Healthrecently advertised 20 Medical Officer posts (between 3 and 18 July 2025), targeting the following districts:
* eThekwini (3)
* Harry Gwala (2)
* King Cetshwayo (3)
* Ugu (3)
* uMgungundlovu (4)
* uThukela (2)
* Zululand (3)
The department received 3,167 applications, and shortlisting was completed between 1 and 5 August 2025. Shortlisted candidates are scheduled to sit for an assessment test on 21 August 2025 at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, with successful applicants expected to commence duty by 15 September 2025.
In an encouraging development, following a successful meeting between the Premier, Finance MEC Francois Rodgers and MEC for Health Ms Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi, the Premier has announced an injection of R150 mimlion to the Health Department.
This R150 million will lead to the advertisement of an additional 270 posts, including positions for doctors, nurses, and data capturers.
Premier Ntuli welcomed this intervention and confirmed the allocation of R150 million in additional funding to strengthen healthcare staffing and absorb more medical professionals.
“Our province cannot afford to let skilled professionals sit idle while communities desperately need healthcare services. This investment is about restoring dignity to our health system and hope to our people,” said Premier Ntuli.
*WOMEN’S DAY COMMEMORATION – 9 AUGUST 2025*
Cabinet also received a report on the state of readiness for the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Women’s Day Commemoration, which will take place on Friday, 9 August 2025, at Inkosi Mzondeni Hall, located in Inkosi Mtubatuba Local Municipality, under the theme: “Empowering Women, Building the Nation.”
The programme will celebrate the legacy of women who paved the way for democracy while spotlighting contemporary efforts to improve the lives of women through education, entrepreneurship, and protection from gender-based violence. Premier Ntuli reiterated that empowering women remains a non-negotiable pillar of inclusive development:
“Women continue to be the backbone of our families, communities, and our economy. This year’s commemoration is a platform to recognise their strength, amplify their voices, and commit to meaningful transformation in every space,” said the Premier.
*RECOGNITION OF AMAKHOSI AND IZINDUNA: STRENGTHENING TRADITIONAL LEADERSHIP*
Cabinet approved the recognition of the following Amakhosi:
* Inkosi for the Mhlana Traditional Community – King Cetshwayo District
* Inkosi Mdletshe for the Mdletshe Traditional Community – uMkhanyakude District
* Inkosi for the Bhejane Traditional Community – King Cetshwayo District
Additionally, Cabinet approved the recognition of:
* 36 Izinduna from various districts
* Izinduna zakwaNtombela from:
*(i) Nobamba Community Authority*
*(ii) Jama Traditional Community*
Premier Ntuli emphasised the Provincial Government’s commitment to working hand in hand with traditional leadership to strengthen governance and rural development:
“Our traditional leaders are not just custodians of customs—they are critical partners in development, social cohesion, and moral leadership. We remain firmly committed to supporting this noble institution,” Premier said.
*MESSAGE TO HIS MAJESTY KING MISUZULU KAZWELITHINI AHEAD OF UMKHOSI WESIVIVANE*
Cabinet noted the upcoming Umkhosi WeSivivane, scheduled for 9 August 2025, under the leadership of His Majesty Isilo Samabandla, King Misuzulu kaZwelithini.
On behalf of the Executive Council and the people of KwaZulu-Natal, Premier Ntuli extended heartfelt wishes to His Majesty and the entire Zulu Nation:
“As the Zulu Nation gathers for Umkhosi WeSivivane, we honour the sacred traditions that have shaped our identity and values. We salute the wise and unifying leadership of His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, and we wish the nation a safe and blessed ceremony filled with spiritual upliftment and cultural pride,” said Premier Ntuli.
