THE Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Mr Sihle Zikalala has congratulated the South African rugby team for their decisive victory over England in the 2019 Rugby World Cup final played in Japan today.
The Springboks, who have never lost a final match in a world cup, went into the game as the firm favourites to have their name engraved on the William Webb Ellis trophy for the third time.
South Africa won 32 - 12 against England to lift the trophy.
Premier Zikalala said the victory augured well for social cohesion and transformation in sports.
“What we saw today was pure excellence and class from a team that was truly representative of our country. This is an extremely proud moment for South Africa and indeed the African continent as a whole. True to the unifying power of sport, today we stand together as a nation, across racial lines, to bask in the glory of Die Bokke. It is up to us, as society, to use this victory to further strengthen our democratic project,” the Premier concluded.
Along with its bitter rivals New Zealand, the Springboks have now won the World Cup a record three times, in 1995, 2007 and now 2019.
