Durban, 6 January 2025 - KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli, joined the family of Ayabonga Mjilo at the Durban Magistrate’s Court today, where the accused appeared to face charges of kidnapping, murder, and defeating the ends of justice.
A Commitment to Justice
Premier Ntuli’s presence at the court highlighted his unwavering support for victims of violent crimes and their families. Speaking after the court proceedings, he condemned the heinous acts that led to Ayabonga’s death and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that justice is served.
“The tragic loss of Ayabonga has left us deeply shaken. We stand with her family as they seek justice, and we will continue to work tirelessly to protect vulnerable members of our society from such atrocities,” said Premier Ntuli.
Strengthening the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence
The Premier used the occasion to emphasise the importance of strengthening efforts to combat gender-based violence and other crimes that threaten the safety of women and children in KwaZulu-Natal.
“Today’s proceedings serve as a reminder of the urgent need to address the scourge of violence in our communities. We will not rest until those who commit such crimes are held accountable,” he added.

Ayabonga’s family expressed gratitude for the Premier’s support during this difficult time, acknowledging his efforts to prioritise the safety and well-being of the province’s most vulnerable citizens.
