The government of KwaZulu-Natal led by Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube working with the Department of Communication and Digital Technology (DCDT) have designed and implemented the first Gigabit wireless mesh network that covers a ward and is serving thousands of community members.
Broadband Infraco and local black-owned internet services providers are part of the team.
Premier Dube-Ncube officially handed over the first Wi-Fi Hotspot in KwaNdengezi today and also visited Botate Primary school. This school is the first to receive the 4IR learning kit comprising of a 3D printer, robotics learning kit, IoT learning kit and a training drone.
As part of the activation, the Premier checked and activated the Wi-Fi hotspot.
The network has been built by young people that are part of the Women in ICT development programme of the Premier.
The hotspots have been deployed in KwaNdengezi, Savanah Park and KwaSanti and the current hotspots cover 500 houses.
