The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development, Mrs. Nonhlanhla Khoza, today officiated the graduation ceremony of over 100 young people after completing a skills development programme through the Department’s youth academy in Wentworth, south of Durban. The courses they went through include assistant chef, garment making and electrical.
The Department constructed the Wentworth Youth Academy in the Durban South Basin as part of the intervention to respond to social ills in the communities.
The majority of the graduates who were recruited in the youth academy come from different backgrounds, including child-headed families, rehabilitation programmes and some are in conflict with the law.
The youth graduates have also been provided with basic computer skills. The youth academy is tasked with the duty to train and produce skilled young people to start their own businesses or get employment in different trades.
