Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Nomusa Dube-Ncube has welcomed the hosting of the 20th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture which will take place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) on Saturday, 12 November 2022.
The 20th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture is being held physically for the first time since the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and will be delivered by the Prime Minister of Barbados Her Excellency Mia Amor Mottley.
“On behalf of the people of KwaZulu-Natal it is an honour to be hosting the 20th Nelson Mandela Lecture, an event that attracts global attention and which will focus much-needed attention on our province. We are particularly honoured and grateful to the Nelson Mandela Foundation as it is the first time in history that this prestigious annual lecture is being held in KwaZulu-Natal,” said Premier Dube-Ncube.
“We are also honoured that the 2022 Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture will be given by the Prime Minister of Barbados, Her Excellency Mia Mottley. This is a clear demonstration of the world’s solidarity with the people of our province as we recover from the destructive impact of this recent climate change-related weather condition,” said Premier Dube-Ncube.
Under the theme: “Social Bonding and Decolonisation in the Context of the Climate Crisis: Perspectives from the Global South”, Prime Minister Mottley is expected to delve on the impact and responses to climate change especially in the developing world.
“We welcome the fact that the Nelson Mandela Foundation is using the lecture to focus on climate change just as the world gathers for COP27 at Sharm el Sheik in Egypt and following the devastating floods in April this year in our province.
“We take this opportunity to welcome all the many delegates who will be attending this lecture. We invite you all to stay and explore our beautiful province further, and to return to stay for even longer when you come back for another visit to our beautiful province of KwaZulu-Natal in the near future”.
