KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC, Mrs Nonhlanhla Khoza, has today joined the women of Sangcwaba village, Ward 05, Ubuhlebezwe Local Municipality, to close the Women’s Month.
MEC Khoza donated a water pump to ensure the empowerment of women who venture into agriculture to better their lives and that of their families.
The Nsongweni Women’s Club started their agricultural project along Bhobhobho river bank, which is a boundary of Umdoni Local Municipality and Ubuhlebezwe Local Municipality.
They also make blocks and sell sand mined from the river to locals as a way to supplement their government social grants.
The Department of Social Development has a clear goal to ensure that it quickly migrates from a welfaristic to a developmental approach, hence the push for women and youth to grab opportunities availed by government.
MEC Khoza made a commitment that the Department will not rest for as long as women bear the brunt of criminality, particularly that of gender-based violence, intertwined with poverty.
