As part of the robust Legislature programme seeking to ensure effectiveness and accountability to the citizens, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Mr Sihle Zikalala today undertook constituency work in Ndwedwe a rural area in the Ilembe District Municipality.
As part of the programme Premier Zikalala visited the local Emakheni Primary School, and met with the school leadership to ascertain the school's preparedness to operate safely under the Covid-19 infection Alert Level 3.
The Premier also addressed learners during their assembly before handing over parcels, including school shoes, to needy learners that were identified by the school.
Addressing the learners at the school the Premier said:
“We are not only here today to donate parcels to you, but we are also here as government to ensure that you go to school and learn in a conducive environment as well as receive a nutritious meal. We need to embrace the spirit of Ubuntu because we are what we are through others,” said Premier Zikalala.
The Premier also visited the Bhamshela Central Business District to assess the damages and economic recovery efforts after the civil unrest. Later, the Premier visited Nsuze Police Station to monitor the operations and functioning of the police station.
“The purpose of today’s programme focuses on our constituency work which is assigned to us as Members of the Provincial Legislature deployed by our various parties, in my case the ANC. I am assigned to work in the area of Ndwedwe. The focus today is on schools and education, but also to inspect the affected businesses after the destruction which was caused by the civil unrest that took place. We are very impressed by the level of commitment displayed in all the schools that we visited. We started early this morning at Emakheni Primary School where we donated school shoes to students as part of the support we offer to needy schools. We identified five schools within this community and we assisted with the donation,” said Premier Zikalala.
Premier Zikalala also met the school’s senior management and members of the Student Governing Body at Mzingezwi Secondary School, and was impressed with the improvements at the school.
“We last visited the school in 2016, and at that time the level and performance of the school was dropping. But we are pleased with the improvement in the school’s performance and we are satisfied with the plans that were presented to further improve the performance of the school,” said Premier Zikalala.
During the visit to Nsuze Police Station the Premier said it was important to get a clear understanding of the state of policing in the area to assess its capacity, performance, effectiveness and therefore the safety of the community.
“Today’s programme is dedicated to community work in Ndwedwe because we have a responsibility to service communities as public representative. As public representatives we should all recommit ourselves to ensure that constituency work should be used more effectively to link the legislature to our people. We must work closer to our people, at whose behest we serve, through Parliament and Legislatures in order to advance our national democratic goals,” concluded Premier Zikalala.
