The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Nomusa Dube Ncube has welcomed the Independent Electoral Commission state of readiness ahead of the general elections next week. Premier Dube-Ncube was delivering a keynote address on inter-governmental support to the elections at the official launch of the IEC’s Provincial Results Operations Centre at Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC.
The Results Operations Centre will be a provincial nerve centre for the duration of the 2024 National and Provincial Elections to be held on 29 May 2024.
The Premier outlined the Province’s state of readiness for the elections.
“The IEC Results Operations Centre is an important physical symbol of our democracy and it represents the hopes and aspirations of the people of KwaZulu-Natal,” said Premier Dube Ncube.
The Premier expressed content that, generally, the people of KwaZulu-Natal have shown commendable political maturity by embracing this critical period in our democracy in a manner which communicates their respect for the vision of a free, united, non-sexist and prosperous South Africa. She also urged political parties to uphold the fundamental principles of the Electoral Code of Conduct.
“We have observed a campaigning period that has been characterized by peace and tolerance. There may have been some isolated pockets of intolerance but by and large this period has been peaceful. I urge our people to isolate those who may want to cause instability and incite our people. I am confident that we are beyond that as a nation,” said the Premier
The Premier added that through the establishment of the Multi-Party-Political Intervention Committee (MPPIC), government continues to champion the pursuit of political tolerance in the province.
“The political stability permeating the campaigning period is partly the result of the hard work that the Justice Crime Prevention and Security Cluster, through its structure, the ProvJoint, is doing publicly and behind closed doors. We also appreciate all our social partners who have worked hard to ensure that we get to this stage peacefully,” concluded the Premier.
