Today KZN MEC for Health Ms Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu, the Department’s senior management, and Community Health Workers (CHWs) were at Umlazi, Durban, for the "Nqonqo – Sikhulekile Ekhaya” programme, which emphasizes the importance of healthcare at a household and community level.
MEC Simelane-Zulu said, " We've decided that we want to visit not only rural areas but also townships. This initiative not only helps us observe the daily undertakings of CHWs and Ward-Based Primary Health Care Outreach Teams (WBPHCOTs),but to also understand the challenges they face so that we can assist as the Department. For instance, today is blazing hot. CHWs should have the appropriate protective gear, and umbrellas suitable to accommodate different weather conditions."
These teams have been assessing clients; facilitating treatment for chronic and other ailments; identifying and tracing those who default on medication and referring them to hospitals accordingly.
In one instance, an elderly lady was identified-right in her home- to have suffered a stroke. A walking stick was given to her and a hospital appointment made for Monday.
