The MEC for Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal, Mrs Weziwe Thusi, will tomorrow officiate at the joint graduation of youth from Vuma and Scabazini Youth Development Academies. A total of 112 youths have completed the Department's youth development programme aimed at empowering youths from previously disadvantaged communities with skills in various fields, including electricity, plumbing and hospitality. More than 700 youths have completed the programme since its inception five years ago, as a measure to address the challenges of unemployment due to low skills levels. The academies offer young people an intensive six-month training programme and accredited certificates, which they can use to further their studies, start their own businesses or seek formal employment. They also receive toolkits to assist them in plying their trade.
The graduations will be held jointly with the commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which is held annually on 26 June.
