The South African Weed Buster Week represents the annual culmination and highlight of the on-going campaign aimed at the management and containment of invasive alien plants. The campaign is an initiative led by the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries through the Environmental Programmes branch, and supported by various partners and stakeholders. The South African campaign is linked to the invasive plant control initiatives by countries such as Australia and New Zealand, as well as to the broader Global Invasive Species Programme.
❖ Invasive alien plants degrade our rich biological diversity. One of the reasons people travel to South Africa and the Western Cape is because of its natural beauty and environment, if invasive alien plants overrun this environment they damage our tourism industry.
❖ Invasive alien plants damage the ecological integrity of our natural systems and also create problems for planting of crops. People depend on these natural systems for their livelihoods and our country cannot do without food production.
