As part of outreach programme MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Mr Themba Mthembu visited various projects in ilembe District.
Accompanied by ilembe District Mayor Cllr Gumede, MEC Mthembu started their day in Shakaskraal Secondary School where the department has invested over R3.9 Million since 2015 in a bid to recapitalise agricultural schools around the district. Through this Project the department wants to improve skills development, agricultural infrastructure, research and training in the Province. The department has provided implements, ICT centre for agricultural students, fencing, refurbishment of lab, established a Greenhouse, establishment of poultry unit and implements student practicals.
MEC Mthembu also visited Mkhitshwa Goat Project in oQandeni area in Maphumulo where the department of Agriculture has erected fencing for grazing camp, provided 170 indigenous goats and built a structure for the goats. The department's veterinary services is also assisting these livestock farmers with training on goat production, castration, animal identification, control of internal and external parasites, nutrition and mating season etc.
MEC Mthembu has commended the work done by the Agricultural office in iLembe district saying " for the economy to grow, it needs to be boosted through agriculture and working together with local municipalities these collaborations can bring about change and help alleviate the triple challenges of Poverty, unemployment and inequality."
