Mayor of Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality, Cllr. Cynthia Mqwebu, is currently briefing the community of Gamalakhe on progress that has been made towards the KwaZulu- Natal Department of Human Sett lement ’s undertaking in June 2012 that the area will benefit from the Government’s Rectification Programme. The Mayor is engaging with beneficiaries and the local leadership on behalf of MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Mr Ravi Pillay.
The R28 million Gamalakhe Rectification Project is expected to be completed by December 2018. To date, 21 refurbished houses and their completion certificates have been issued. Over and above this, 55 houses are nearing completion stage.
The scope of work included removing rusted door frames, windows and damaged doors, replacing them with new ones. The houses have been plastered externally whilst the interior walls have been bag washed. In addition, toilet cisterns were replaced and showers provided.
The beneficiaries of the Rectification Programme will be taking the first step on their journey of getting rightful ownership of their houses in line with the Human Settlements Department’s Enhanced Extended Discount Benefit Scheme (EEDBS) policy instrument. EEDBS promotes home ownership among tenants of state-financed rental housing and serviced sites.
