Today, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu and Members of his Executive Council are in Umkhanyakude as part of a campaign to mobilize communities to be part of a broader campaign aimed at ensuring the provision of quality education.
Mchunu remarked: “We are here to appeal to the community of this district to never look back following excellent matric results. We are encouraged by the 69, 17% achieved as opposed to 62, 69% recorded in 2015.”
“The critical feature of this district is that it is largely rural. As we all know, in terms of infrastructure and access to resources, historically, rural schools struggle the most. The improvement we saw during 2016 academic year is largely due to the deliberate investment of government in the provision of infrastructure.
Further, this is also as result of the creativity and innovation of teachers; the dedication of learners and the active participation of parents and communities in the education of their children.”
“We commend all role-players and we are here to encourage them to seek to improve even further and we trust that other districts will follow suit in understanding that it is not only about resources but also about the dedication of all the social partners involved.”
