Housing delivery is one of the key priority programmes for Provincial Government of KwaZulu-Natal, therefore in ensuring fast-tracking of housing service delivery within the communities of KwaZulu-Natal the MEC for Department of Human Settlements and Public Works Honorable N.P Nkonyeni led the official handover of Operation Sukuma Sakhe house to Ms Simangele Masondo in Nquthu, uMzinyathi District. The MEC was accompanied by MEC for Social Development Honorable N. Khoza, MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Honorable B. Sithole-Moloi and MEC for Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation Honorable H. Mavimbela who was there on her capacity as MEC Champion for the District.
This entourage of the MEC’S was driven by the programme initiated by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government called Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) which is an urgent and immediate intervention designed to respond to the emergency housing assistance to destitute and needy families within the community. Through OSS intervention, Ms. Simangele Masondo (49) from eThelezini was amongst eighteen (18) beneficiaries who were affected by the 2013 storm damage and has never benefitted from any form of a housing subsidy.
Ms Masondo could not contain her joy of having a proper shelter over her head, further beyond receiving a house she was also surprised by the presence of the MEC for Social Development Ms. N. Khoza who handed over groceries, electric appliances and blankets to Masondo family.
In addition, the MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Ms. B. Sithole-Moloi on her One Home One Garden Programme provided vegetable planting seeds, planting implements and planted fruit trees in Masondo household’s garden with a purpose of eradicating poverty.
She expressed her gratitude to the Provincial Government and everyone who contributed to everything she and her family received. “it’s been hard for me and my family as I am unemployed, we are relying on child support grants and having received a house with groceries, blankets and bed means a lot to me, my prayers have been answered and my family will not have any problem even if I pass away I know that they have a proper home and they all will be collected under the one roof, thank you KwaZulu Natal Government” said Simangele.
MEC Nkonyeni assured the Masondo family that their lives will never be the same again, they do not have worry even on bad weather conditions. “In windy and stormy weather conditions we now know that they will not have any problem, this brand new house we handing over today will never get destroyed by any bad weather condition” said MEC Nkonyeni.
MEC Nkonyeni also encouraged Ms Masondo to make use of other resources handed over by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development such as hand hoe, plant watering can and insisted that seeds that are already planted must be irrigated therefore they grow well.
“we always insist that people can always benefit from their gardens, you can also sell what you have in your garden, Department of Agriculture and Human Settlements are jointly working together as will be launching Organic farming soon and work with other Departments as well to change people’s lives and eradicate poverty, Masondo family will be eating from their garden now and sell if they want to” MEC added.
