The Office of the KwaZulu-Natal Premier has noted with serious concerns erroneous reports in the media which have suggested that one of the four officials arrested in connection with fraud and corruption was a personal assistant to Premier Sihle Zikalala.
This is incorrect and journalists are requested to retract the erroneous reporting.
The Office of the Premier would like to place it on record that no personal assistant to Premier Zikalala has been arrested but the person arrested was a personal assistant to one of the officials in the finance unit.
We implore the media to double check their facts instead of being driven by sensational journalism aimed at portraying the Premier in a negative light.
The Office of the Premier also wants to place it on record that this is not a new investigation as some media houses have incorrectly suggested but the same investigation being conducted by the Hawks.
We wish to reiterate that The Office of the Premier respects the rule of law and will allow the law to take its course.
As we stated previously, the Office of the Premier had already placed some of these officials on precautionary suspension pending the conclusion of the internal disciplinary processes.
Now that the matter is in the hands of the criminal justice system, we are duty-bound to allow the process to unfold.
We, however, wish to reiterate our position that as government we are committed to good and clean governance.
We, therefore, appeal to the media to stick to ethical journalism when reporting on matters and stop jumping to erroneous conclusions.
